Thank you for visiting the official website of the Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Association (Singapore). Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a common disease afflicting millions of people worldwide and exacting a very heavy global disease burden. Surprisingly, public awareness of this disease is lacking and many people have not even heard of it. If you would like to find out more about this medical condition, you have arrived at the CORRECT website! There is certainly a lot written out there on COPD - but, not enough, in our opinion, to make the illness or its treatment easily understood by all. In addition, there is much that is new in COPD, including new ways to think about the disease and its management, and this website aims to provide an up-to-date summary of such material. So go on - check out the various sections of this website, and even better, be a member of the COPD association Membership.

President's Message

COPD is a common illness that causes a great deal of suffering worldwide. In developed countries, it is the only major fatal disease of which the death rate is increasing - a disparity all the more striking amid the dramatic decline in deaths from other major illnesses such as coronary artery disease, stroke, and other cardiovascular disorders. It has been estimated that a million years of life are lost each year worldwide because of COPD. In Singapore it is likely that more than 60,000 people suffer from it. Yet, unless you or a loved one have symptoms of the disease, you are unlikely to have come across the term "COPD".

The Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) Association (Singapore) was formed this year with a mission of raising awareness among patients, caregivers and the public about the impact of COPD and the various ways to prevent it, detect it and manage it once the disease is established. On behalf of the executive committee of the COPD association (Singapore), I welcome and look forward to your support for the association. If you or a loved one has COPD, I urge you to join us and benefit from the association's educational programme and various support activities.
